Today, we introduce a weekly current events column, and ask you to share your opinion about an issue in the news. Please let us know what you think in the “comments” section of each article!
We begin with Treyvon Martin, the 17 year old African American boy who was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida nearly a month ago. The shooter, George Zimmerman, a member of a neighborhood watch group, has no proven motive for killing the clean-cut high-school student. He claims, however, to have been acting in self defense. Martin was unarmed, walking home. Multiple investigations are ongoing, most consisting of allegations of racism…so what’s your take? What should be done to Zimmerman? Do you feel that the scandal is being handled appropriately? Let us know in the comments section.

Why was Neighborhood Watch volunteer allowed to carry a gun? My first thought is that Mr. Zimmerman should be charged at minimum with manslaughter; If the accusation that Mr. Zimmerman was stalking Treyvon, then the charge should be premeditated murder. My question is: Do Neighborhood Watch volunteers routinely carry firearms? They are not law enforcement officials; their function is to watch and report. Do we all have to worry about our children or ourselves if a NW volunteer decides he doesn’t like you?
